Objectives

This project aims to engage early career artists and scientists to integrate their expertise in order to create an artwork that communicates ecological themes, thereby engaging a wider audience as the process is documented via social and traditional media.

Ten early career artists and scientists will create five new artworks addressing a current ecological issue by focusing on one scientific paper that discusses shifting baselines in the marine environment.

Using a programme of workshops, discussions and exchange visits, five artist-scientist pairs will develop a conversation about ecological issues in the marine environments. The artists are encouraged to create a piece of work that relates to their take on the issues raised in the paper, while the scientists will be challenged to share the pairs’ experiences through traditional and social media as an on-going piece of work throughout the project.

Objectives:

Public engagement: By interpreting and representing the content of one scientific paper, early career artists and scientists will engage with the public to raise awareness and to stimulate discussion of ecological and environmental issues.
We will use social media to involve the public in the creation of the artwork. By inviting them to collaborate, comment and participate, we are hoping to develop their understanding and awareness of the ecological issues discussed in the journal article. Throughout the process the audience will be following the progress of creating the original artwork.

Reframing conventional approaches from art and science: The meeting is for artist-scientist partnerships to develop. By engaging with each other, we are hoping to develop a truly trans-disciplinary approach of interpreting and discussing a scientific paper.
